The importance of the Sun in a chart

Yesterday i wrote about Moon’s strenght and how important it is for the general prosperity of the chart. After this I read two ślokas of Horā Sāra, written by the son of Varāhamihira, Pṛthuyasas which says:

Should the Sun and the Moon be exceedingly strong, all other planets, though weak, will yield good effects in their periods. – Śloka 34, Cp. 3

The Sun gives vitality to the daśā effects, while the Moon regains the same. All other planets are known as starry planets and remain under the influence of the Sun and the Moon. – Śloka 8, Cp. 8

This ślokas clearly shows the importance of the Sun and the Moon in a horoscope. It is from the strengths of them that the Grahas derive their own strengths. Vishal ji, my jyotiṣa guru says that Sun and Moon shows inspirations, and without this inspirations how can we live? And how can we succeed?

But as I wrote earlier about Moon’s strength, now we can focus only on Sun. There is a śloka in Phaladīpikā which says:

The Sun is the significator of the person’s collection of copper and gold, and of father, patience, valour, victory in war, one’s soul (ātmā), auspiciousness, happiness, prowess, power, light, any work relating to Lord Śiva, travels in forests and mountains, havans or yajñas, inclinations for work, temple, acuteness, enthusiasm. Wise men should act according to theses significations. – Śloka 1, Cp. 2

Through this kārakas we can understand better what to see from the Sun. It shows our sva, the Self and the strength of this. When Sun is strong, the person shines, his influence is recognized and he has power to become a leader. He is confidant over himself and can even use hard words to express the truth if it’s needed. Sun is called Sūrya which means the best of the aryas, those beings which walks in the right path of dharma. If we look to the Grahas we’ll see that only the Sun has a constant motion with very low variations, because of this the major part of the calendars is based on sun’s annual motion. He never leaves his path, he is a follower of the truth, and he has incredible power. It’s said that one perfect man is sufficient to guide and give an example to the humanity. In a similar manner, the Sun alone reigns among the Grahas and guides all of them through his path, so his a perfect leader and is always in the center.

            In Sarvārtha-cintāmaṇi is said:

If the Sun is located in the 10º degree of libra, the native loses the nice results of thousands of good yogas in his horoscope. – Śloka 29, Cp. 9

Based on this we can understand how Sun is important regarding rājā yogas and other good yogas to fructify. 10º of libra is his maximum degree of nīcha (debilitation), so if he is there, it destroys the general power of the chart, as a man without character and integrity loses his name and fame.

So, to have a strong Sun, the following conditions is important:

(1)  He gets strength in leo, aries and his friend signs, this has to be analyzed in D1, D3, D9 and other vargas.
(2)  Sun gets strength in his northerly course (uttarayana).
(3)  Among the dreṣkaṇas, he is strong in the first dreṣkaṇa.
(4)  His dig bala is in the 10th house and is strong also in 11th house.
(5)  He is strong during the day, although also in 3th and 6th houses.
(6)  All his strength is destroyed during twilights and eclipses.
(7)  In a odd sign, in his own horā (D2) he also becomes strong.
(8)  Sūrya yogas is very important, which is formed by planets in 2th or 12th (or both) from him.
(9)  His relation with friends like Mars and Jupiter strengthen him.
(10) If the birth occurred in a Sunday, he also becomes strong.

The more of these indications present in a chart, stronger the Sun will be. But now comes the question: in which way a man with strong Sun but weak Moon will succeed? In this case I perceived that although the person does not receive support from the society, family and circumstances (Moon), and it creates a lot of emotional struggle and mental agonies, the person continues to show character and inner strength, and because of this it continues to shine, although does not get support. It also indicates that the person cannot nurture well his opportunities and gained powers due to a lot of anxieties and other emotional and mental problems that prejudice him. This kind of person prefers to work hard to obtain things in his own way than to receive things from others, they are more independent and powerful, although mentally unsatisfied.

The Sun is strengthened when the person reads sacred books like the Bhagavad-gītā which is full of ātmā-jñāna (knowledge of the soul), as well as through the singing of sacred hymns and mantras like the Gāyatrī, the following of spiritual truths, firmness in moral conduct, and when you just be yourself, knowing well who you are and what is your own limitations. This kind of frankness is a solar trait. Pilgrimages, visits to temples, the performance of fire sacrifices and wake up early in the morning (before sun's appearance) also is good to strenghten the Sun. The steadiness in vows and truthfulness is the way of Sūrya, the one which works with full concentration and always in the right way as well as Śrī Rama. He is also connected with Śiva ji, which is firmly fixed in His seat of meditation, absorbed in many spiritual truths.
