Exalted benefics as lords of dusthānas

            There is a dictum, which says:

If a benefic planet happens to own a dusthāna (6^th, 8^th or 12^th), it will destroy the house occupied by him even if he may be occupying his sign of exaltation… – Śloka 24, Cp. 23 of Phaladīpikā

I did a research on this, focused on benefics as lords of dusthānas posited in their exaltation signs. I’ll share here some of my findings on it:

(1)  The twelve lagnas will have one or even two benefic planets having lordship of dusthānas.

(2)  For leo, sagittarius and aquarius Moon will have lordship of 12^th, 8^th and 6^th respectively.

(3)  For aries, cancer, libra, scorpio, capricorn and aquarius Mercury will have lordship of 6^th, 12^th, 12^th, 8^th, 6^th, and 8^th respectively.

(4)  For taurus, gemini, libra, scorpio, sagittarius and pisces Venus will have lordship of 6^th, 12^th, 8^th, 12^th, 6^th and 8^th respectively.

(5)  For aries, taurus, cancer, leo, libra and capricorn Jupiter will have lordship of 12^th, 8^th, 6^th, 8^th, 6^th and 12^th respectively.

(6)  So based on this we have 21 possibilities of benefics owning dusthānas.

Seeing this, almost half of the exaltations will not act as auspicious, because there will be six lagnas for each benefic planet and three for the Moon which will act as inauspicious. From this we can see also that many of the Mahāpuruṣa yogas will be spoiled. However, before accepting this we have to consider the following:

(1)  Of this 21 possibilities, there are some cases in which the planet is a functional benefic for the lagna, as well as cases where the mūlatrikoṇa of the planet falls in a benefic house, and this will modify the results. If such a planet is in his exaltation he will promote more auspicious than inauspicious results, particularly when his mūlatrikoṇa is in a benefic house and the planet in question forms good yogas.

(2)  What was said in (1) above has to be studied cautiously, because this planets own also a malefic house, so certain associations can expand the evil. An example is Jupiter exalted in 4^th house for a aries lagna. Although predominantly benefic, I saw cases of Jupiter in this house giving from emotional agonies to even airplane accidents when bad associated.

(3)  In cases where the planet not only is a functional malefic, but also have his mūlatrikoṇa sign falling in a malefic house, this can create many hurdles in the house where it is positioned. Just to show and example, I saw many charts with exalted Jupiter in 10^th house creating a lot of problems in career due to powerful enemies, as well as litigations, public attacks, and things like that, although this didn’t neglect social status to the person.

(4)  In general, the bad indications can occur only when the exalted planet is bad associated, otherwise it will bring good results, as Moon in 10^th house for a leo lagna brings career recognition in foreign countries, but afflicted give some kind of social scandal, controversial public image, etc.

(5)  If the benefic is also the dispositor of malefic planets, he can create a lot of problems where it is positioned. Joy Dirksen Baker had Venus exalted in 5^th house as lord of 7^th and 12^th, with Mars and Rahu in 7^th. He was an alcoholic and died addicted.

(6)  Diseases is a common factor as this planets own houses which produces diseases. This will be even worst if the planet is an enemy of lagna lord.

(7)  The general analysis of the chart is important as it can modify everything. The strength of the lord of the lagna, as well as the strength of the Sun and the Moon is decisive to every kind of yoga.

Based on the above mentioned points we can understand that an exalted benefic lord of dusthānas creates significant problems in the houses where it’s positioned especially when:

(1)  Bad associated.

(2)  Being the dispositor of malefics.

(3)  His mūlatrikona sign falls in a malefic house.

(4)  He is a functional malefic.

Considering this rules with care we can understand when and how an exalted benefic planet can act in an inauspicious way. The more of these indications, worst will be the results of the planet. But if the planet does not fit in this indications, so although it can create some problem, it will not destroy the house occupied and his auspicious results can be stronger if it has lordship over an auspicious house (1, 5, 9). In a similar manner, is not because it has a malefic lordship that it will not create any kind of auspicious results. Exalted planets gives 100% of results according to BPHS, so it has to be considered. What i perceived looking many charts is that status does not negate problems and vice versa.
